The conjecture surrounding Victoria and David Beckham’s marriage will never stop being tabloid fodder. One single picture of them holding hands but looking away from each other can signal trouble in their 20-year union. (Exhibit A: The British Fashion Awards in December 2018.)
In a new interview with The Guardian, Victoria admits the continual attention on her relationship is “annoying.” “It can get quite frustrating. But I leave it to my PR team. I don’t get involved,” she said. “You do have to be quite controlling because people do believe what they read, and when it’s completely fabricated, that’s really annoying.”
As the journalist notes though, the 44-year-old fashion designer was reluctant to talk about her relationship – she would speak about David but when the topic turned to her marriage, a cool demeanour came over Victoria and “the temperature in the room seemed to drop a degree.”
“People are interested in my personal life,” she continued. “And sometimes that works in my favour and sometimes it’s things that I don’t like. I’m not going to let it get me down.”
Victoria was forthcoming however in speaking about how she juggles her incredibly busy schedule. “I never cook. I used to – when we lived in Spain, I used to cook a lot,” she says. “But these days I don’t tend to get home till late, so dinner wouldn’t be ready till quite late. David’s a really good cook…I am very, very disciplined in the way that I work out, in what I eat. That’s how I’m happiest. I expect a lot from my body – I’m 44, I’ve got four kids, I work a lot, I travel. For me to do all that, I have to eat healthily and work out.”
In an interview with The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson last year, David labelled his marriage to Victoria as “hard work” and “complicated”. “The amount [Victoria’s] achieved in a short space of time with four beautiful children, you know, we have a beautiful dog,” David said. “Obviously, in her business world, to be on the front cover of Vogue was a huge thing and then we did a separate picture for another cover. But to have been married for the amount of time that we have, you know, it’s always hard work.”
“Everybody knows that but you make it work, you make difficult situations, you know, like travelling away, being away from each other, you make it work,” he continued. “We’ve been married for a long time now.”
