In early January we received a sneak peak at Elle Fanning’s incredible transformation for the highly-anticipated Hulu true-crime drama series, The Girl From Plainville. The Golden Globe-nominated actress will star as Michelle Carter who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter of the suicide of her then-boyfriend, Conrad Henri Roy III when he was encouraged to take his own life in 2014.

Overnight the official trailer was released with the first episode premiering for Australian viewers on Stan on March 30 – the same day as the U.S. The Girl From Plainville is inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter and is based on the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron. It will explore Carter’s relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to his death and, later, her conviction.

The series also features Chloë Sevigny (Lynn Roy), Colton Ryan (Conrad “Coco” Roy III), Cara Buono (Gail Carter), Kai Lennox (David Carter), and Norbert Leo Butz (Conrad “Co” Roy II).

It is written and executive produced by co-showrunners Liz Hannah (THE POST, The Dropout, Mindhunter) and Patrick Macmanus (Dr. Death), and also executive produced by Fanning and Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward. The Michelle Carter case was the subject of a HBO two-part documentary I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter in 2019. The masterminds behind the documentary Barron and Erin Lee Carr will serve as consulting producers.

Following a first look at the series, Hannah and McMannus discussed Fanning’s amazing transformation. “The physicality that Elle found in playing Michelle — she studied all of the courtroom tapes, she studied the documentary [HBO’s I Love You, Now Die] — she really threw herself into making sure that the movement and the way she spoke was authentic, as well. So I think that in tandem with the change physically really brings it all together,” Hannah said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Mark your calendars.
