It’s often reported that the public’s love affair with Julia Roberts began way back in 1990 when she starred in Pretty Woman. But, to be honest we can probably admit to even further back than that…to the time she broke all our hearts as Shelby in 1989’s Steel Magnolias. Fittingly, it was this film that awarded her her very first Golden Globe when she was just 22 years old. This means that as of this year, we’re celebrating 30 years of love for one of the true movie stars of our time.
Today, Roberts, 51, has walked the Golden Globes red carpet once again, and proved just why she is the glamorous superstar we always champion. In a sensational asymmetrical Stella McCartney ensemble consisting of a gathered tulle bodice pulled around a pair of sharp-cut silk cigarette pants, the mother of three decorated the look with her most famous accessory: that enigmatic, radiating smile.
Fashion speaking, one can’t help but draw parallels to Amal Clooney’s trousers-and-skirt creation that the human rights lawyer wore to last year’s Met Gala. Clooney’s Richard Quinn masterpiece garnered a lot of attention, both good and bad for its unique pairing of both trousers and gown-train.
Roberts’ take today at the Golden Globes is somewhat more subdued than Clooney’s and we think makes more a case for this style as a possible formal trend. A classically chic silhouette juxtaposed by a surprising, modern cut. A metaphor for the actress herself, really. Forever classic but always with her finger on the modern pulse.
