We know you think it’s not possible to love ultimate soft boy Timothée Chalamet anymore than you already do, but I’m sorry, this news is likely to send you teetering off the edge.

For the actor’s new role in Little Women, director Greta Gerwig revealed that Chalamet essentially styled himself as Laurie Laurence because his fashion sense is just that damn good.

And by that damn good, we mean that fashion search platform Lyst declared the 24-year-old the most influential man in fashion and GQ went as far as to name him as the second most fashionable man of the decade – the decade! – behind tennis player Roger Federer.

I mean:

“The truth is Jacqueline [Durran], the costume designer, said Timothée has such a fabulous sense of style that she basically would just let him do what he wanted,” Gerwig said on Variety’s The Big Ticket podcast. “She did hang a bunch of different costumes in his trailer and say, ‘Whatever you want to put together.’”

Gerwig, however, did encourage Chalamet to research and read essays about dandies and flaneurs – the name given to fashionable French male socialites – as well as the work of 19th-century poet Charles Baudelaire to prepare for his role.

Plus, according to Vulture, costume designer Jacqueline Durran made sure to include looks echoing Chalamet’s own personal style, telling the publication that he is “a very iconic kind of boy” and one of the most stylish people she’s ever met.

“I was looking at a way to amalgamate those pictures in a look that worked for Timothée,” she said. “He contributed so strongly to how he wore the clothes. When we were fitting for them, I’d tell him, Look at these things, this is what you got, how would you wear it?”

She continued, “That’s how we went on and got the flavour of Timothée into the style of the clothes. It was how he chose to style the items. He has a way of wearing things.”

Beyond channelling Chalamet’s personal style, Durran also explained how his wardrobe in the film was actually used to demonstrate his strong connection to Jo March, played by Saorise Ronan.

“We made duplicate costumes for them to wear in parallel, as if they were wearing each other’s clothes,” she told Fashionista – something an eagle-eyed Twitter user picked up on after seeing the film:

BRB, off to watch Little Women on repeat for the rest of January.
