Was it powder blue? Was it periwinkle? Ah, the great dress debacle of this year’s Golden Globes. And whilst the colour conundrum which plagued Lady Gaga’s gown may have beguiled the internet, nothing could take away from the sheer magic of the dress. It was periwinkle / lilac/ lavender / sky blue magic. And it was the inspiration behind Gaga’s entire beauty look, including that spectacular smokey eye.

“She loved the idea of incorporating the colour of the dress into her hair and makeup. She wanted to feel like Lady Gaga,” said Sarah Tanno, Gaga’s long-time makeup artist.

The eye look had all the hallmarks of a traditional smokey eye – smudged depth, a buffed-out wing, an inky lash line – but this smokey eye was Gaga-fied. Tanno highlighted the hues of Gaga’s Valentino gown by dusting a shimmering pigment in a similar periwinkle shade across the socket and on the inner corners of the eye, giving the look a frosty feel.

Sparkling, periwinkle perfection; this purple-powered smokey eye is just the thing when drama calls. Recreate the look below.

1. First, Tanno used Marc Jacobs Beauty Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow in “Frivoluxe“, and blended the shades “Dress”, a frosty plum, and “How You Want”, a deep purple, up and out to create layers of smoke.
2. She then blended Marc Jacobs Beaty Eye Crayon in “Blacquer” along the lash line, followed by See-Quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in “Flashlight”, an icy opal, to add some glamour and give the liner that frosty finish.
3. And to finish? Sarah’s go-to finishing touch for Gaga – Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara – on both top and bottom lashes.
