Judging a book by its cover is a no-no – but how about a movie by its trailer?

The first look at Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the movie about American serial killer Ted Bundy starring Zac Efron and Lily Collins dropped overnight, and a quick read of online comments reveals some aren’t impressed.

Many viewers noted the tone of the trailer is a bit light-hearted for such a serious subject – a man who murdered 30 people and may have killed more than 100.

“This looks way too… fun… for a movie about a serial killer.,” said one YouTube user.

“I almost feel like they’re trying to make this film something fun and making Ted Bundy seem misunderstood,” said another. “He murdered dozens of innocent young women. That shouldn’t be glorified or made light of.”

The tone could be explained by the fact the story is told from the perspective of Bundy’s wife Carol, who struggled with what to believe about her husband.

It’s only a preview, so we’ll withhold judgement until seeing the full movie. It premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this month. A wider release date for the film is TBC.
