Between the falling cherry blossom and fluorescent flourishes of Tokyo’s streets, a beautiful rendition of the irreverent romantic was told.
Referencing the effortlessly whimsical beauty looks of Prada, Chloe, Sonia Rykiel and Isabel Marant, the hair for Grazia’s Tokyo editorial was pretty with a punch. Under the masterful eye of Rodney Wayne’s Creative Director, Richard Kavanagh, a rumpled, worn wave played out, rhythmic and fluid like the drifting pink blooms. Its jolt of red? Some very cool bangs, which captured the urban air of Tokyo.
Using the signature GHD waving technique, Richard Kavanagh shows us how to recreate the look with the Classic Wave Wand, even divulging how to feign a fringe. Ride the wave with Richard below.
1. START WITH CLEAN, DRY HAIR.
2. THROW YOUR HEAD UPSIDE DOWN and spray 5 to 10 pumps of a lightweight texture spray all the way through. i like Redken Fashion Waves 07, sea salt spray.
3. THEN, BEFORE THE PRODUCT DRIES, and with your head still upside down, spray some dry shampoo all the way through. This will give a more lightweight wispy, flyaway texture.
4. THROW YOUR HEAD BACK UP THE RIGHT WAY, give it a quick blast with a hot hairdryer to make sure all the product is dry, then get ready to wave.
5. PART YOUR HAIR IN THE MIDDLE. Starting at the front of your head, on the left hand side take a medium sized section roughly from the highest point of your head diagonally forward to just above the temple.
6. HOLD THIS HAIR IN YOUR LEFT HAND and the wand in your right hand. Come up and over your head with your right hand, and wrap the hair around the middle of the wand one time allowing it to twist as it wraps. Hold for 5 to ten seconds and release.
7. MOVE DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE HAIR and repeat the same technique closer to the ends…
8. MAKE SURE THAT THE HAIR IS NOT SITTING FLAT AROUND THE WAND or you’ll get a classic barrel curl like a barbie doll. It’s the twist in the hair that makes it feel effortless and easy.
9. NOW, SWAP HANDS AND REPEAT ON THE OTHER SIDE.
10. DO THE WHOLE HEAD LIKE THIS IN APPROXIMATELY 9 OR 10 TOTAL SECTIONS. It should take you around 5 minutes to complete.
11. THEN, USING A CUSHION BRUSH OR A PADDLE BRUSH, give your hair a very light surface brush to remove any clumpy texture.
12. Shake it out with your hands and you’re good to go.
13. FOR EXTRA VOLUME AT THE ROOTS, try a small sprinkle of hair powder. I like Redken Powder Grip.
