Time after time, we hear the same truisms bandied about when it comes to our brows. Don’t pluck above the brow line. High arches will give you an instant face lift. Castor Oil will help them grow. But are such platitudes just Old Wives Tales, or is there some truth to them? Here, celebrity brow queen, Jazz Pampling, sets the brow record straight, once and for all.

You shouldn’t remove hair from above the brow
This is purely personal preference. I think this rule came around because people didn’t know what they were doing. If I don’t need to remove hair from the above brow I won’t. Leaving your top lines natural, while grooming underneath creates a brow that looks natural but defined, almost like you woke up look amazing without ever trying. However, some brows need top line grooming in order to create shape. Talk with your brow artist and let them groom this area.

Creating a high arch gives your face and eyes a lifted look
This is actually not the case. A high arch is one of the most aeging shapes you can create in your brow. As we get older the muscle around the eye will start to drop and it becomes a little puffy. When you over arch the brow you emphasise the puffiness of this area. If you want to create youthful features, look at a youthful face. Keep your brow arch low to medium and look at lifting your brow tail rather than the arch.

Thinning the brow out will help to open the eye area up
This is also not the case. There is a point where the brow can become too thin and it will stop framing your features. If you think about a piece of glass. The glass isn’t a window without the wooden frame. If the frame is too wide you no longer see the glass, but a frame that’s too thin no longer draws in your attention. A thin brow often makes your eyes less of a feature because you have taken away their frame. Someone with a thick brow will find that if they thin their brow out, other features can look larger such as your nose, forehead or cheek plane.

Threading is gentler than waxing
Threading causes as much pulling on the skin as wax can. All hair removal involves tension on the skin. This is important so that you don’t tear or bruise the skin during the process, this is also the same with tweezing, however tweezing is the gentlest way to remove your brow hair.

If I pencil my black coloured brow with a lighter colour, it will help my brow look lighter
Unfortunately no. Black brows or dark brown brows are hard to fill. You don’t want to use black to fill the brow in, but you want to hide those cheeky gaps you have. At this point you are probably throwing your hands up in the air in frustration. The key is to find ashy toned brunette colours, and apply them as lightly as possible. Mac eyebrow pencils have a great variety colours that suit everyone.

If I shave my brow, the hair will grow back thicker
Unlike our legs, this is not the case. Brows are such gentle souls and any form of hair removal will cause them issues. Don’t remove any hair from your brow unless you are confident that you don’t need it.

Castor oil helps brow hair grow
Yes and No. While you won’t see major changes in the brow using castor oil, in my experience clients who have used this product have seen small changes in their brow. From extra hair growth to generally more conditioned brow hair. I think it is definitely worth trying.
