For the first time since its launch in 2012, The Big Design Market will make its way to Sydney with an inaugural event taking place the week before the beloved annual Melbourne event.
Held each year in the weeks before Christmas, The Big Design Market does exactly what its name suggests, creating an environment where Australia’s best established and most exciting emerging designers from a variety of disciplines can come together at a consumer focused event that prides itself on quality, originality and ethically produced designs.
Each iteration of the market will contain over 230 stallholders whose works encompass textiles, homewares and furniture as well as fashion, object design and lighting produced by some of Australia’s eminent design talents, including designer-illustrator Beci Orpin, jeweller Elke Kramer, furniture designer and maker Trent Jansen and ceramicist Bridget Bodenham. In addition to the markets, both events will host a series of workshops highlighting the singular talents of Australia’s design scene game-changers: Orpin will lead a stamp making workshop in both cities, as will Home-Work, who will lead a tutorial on their signature block-printing techniques; in Sydney, interiors savant Sibella Court will also lead a styling workshop wherein she’s sure to divulge (some of) the secrets to emulating the maximal, rich eclecticism that has seen her become one of Australia’s most popular stylists.
In addition to the rich design talent on offer, there’ll also be sustenance to sustain shoppers in the form of culinary contributions from Messina, Mecca Coffee, Archie Rose, Mary’s, Young Henry’s, Misschu and Pana Chocolate in Sydney; Melbourne will also be able to sample many of the same vendors, in addition to the wares of Earl Canteen, Beatbox Kitchen, All Day Donuts and Faire Ferments.
