Ah, ’tis the season! Awards season, that is.
As the dust – or glitter – settles on another Golden Globes, we pick up that very glitter and show you exactly how to use it on your eyes, cheeks and faces at home, as celebrity makeup artist Michael Brown rounds up his top makeup trends from the night.
From deep sea d-eye-ving to strawberries ‘n’ cream complexions, here are Michael’s top trends to take note of, and more importantly, how to try them at home.
Red carpet, optional. Looking fabulous, obligatory.
Marine Eyes
Sea green and electric blue were striking on the Globes red carpet, a trend which has come and gone a few times, but applied the right way, can add that ‘extra’ touch for a red carpet or the like.
To apply realistically in the real world, my tip is keep it simple and have one focus point. Use your go-to neutral shades of eye shadow and then add the marine pop of colour either;
– A bright application on the inner eye, tear-duct area to pull focus.
– Only on the lower lash line to keep top of eye Smokey, and then lower lash line ‘wow’ factor.
– A small amount, but bold in tone, right on the centre of the mobile eyelid, enough to when the eye is open, you can still see the marine shade.
**This look works very well with darker features and brown eyes, as it adds contrast.
Eye ‘lit’ lids
Kim Kardashian is the queen of eye ‘lit’ lids and the look filtered down to this year’s Golden Globes.
This look is about using neutral shades to shape and structure eyes in the socket and outer wing to really emphasise a wider, open eye effect (think Gaga and Emily Blunt), then adding a very metallic shade on the upper mobile eyelid…
– The trick is to just dab the metallic product on the eyelid, right up into the socket line.
– I use my brush to massage the metallic texture into the lid, so there is no fall out.
– The metallic ‘lit’ effect should be visible when the eye is open, right in the centre of the eyes.
Strawberries and Cream glow
We saw a lot of barely there looks on this red carpet and the hues where following our riding love of Rosé, just like strawberries and cream.
A lot of these looks were on women with a similar skin tone, so it’s almost as if they just ‘lifted’ their own tones and added extra glow and touches of rose to keep their look fresh and youthful.
– A great way to recreate this look is to keep skin super fresh and lots of glow, but creamy, not a powder metallic highlighter that most use…
– Add a soft rosé blush on the top area of apple of cheeks to lift, and use the same tone across the mobile eyelid.
– Use lots of mascara and/or lashes to contrast and add depth and then finish with a bitten-lip tone lipstick.
Sunset Glam
Peachy orange shades have been making statements in makeup palettes for the past year and they can really awaken the eyes to take your look one step up from the general ‘nude’ tones we all gravitate to.
These sunset shades suit all eye colours and can be worn as a pop of lifted colour on the centre of the mobile eyelid, as an all over wash shade across eyelid, mirroring on the bottom lash line and of course, only on the bottom lash line to brighten your look and eye colour.
– Always use metallic versions more in the inner/centre of eyes and keep matte tones as depth shades on the outer eye.
– Add with a matching lip to emphasise the look, or keep nude to pull focus only on the sunset eyes.
