Taylor Swift grew up in front of the world, which means that her love life has always been of huge public interest. The intrigue into her relationships accelerated when she started dating other celebrities – photos of that Harry Styles walk in Central Park will never not be etched into my brain – and the subsequent break-up songs that followed, such as ‘Dear John’ written about certified player John Mayer.

After a very public relationship with musician Calvin Harris, which, by the looks of things, ended rather badly, Swift decided to try something new: keep her relationships completely out of the public eye. Her approach seems to have worked, too. For the past three years, Swift has been dating British actor, Joe Alwyn, and by all accounts, it looks like she’s finally found The One.

Not only have the pair been quarantining together this year, but Swift finally confirmed recently that Alwyn co-wrote some of the songs on her surprise album, folklore, which was released in June and that he did the same for her new album, evermore, which she released overnight.

After multiple hints in recent songs, and a photoshoot in which she wore a piece of string on her engagement finger, fans are convinced that Alwyn and Swift are secretly engaged, and many were waiting with bated breath to find out if she’d reveal wedding plans in her new record.

Unfortunately for us, just like folklore, evermore is fiction and, unlike Swift’s other albums, isn’t based on her personal experiences. In one song, ‘champagne problems’, Swift discusses an engagement, singing, “I never was ready so I watch you go/Sometimes you just don’t know the answer/’Til someone’s on their knees and asks you/’She would’ve made such a lovely bride/What a shame she’s fucked in the head,’ they said,” and “Your mom’s ring in your pocket/My picture in your wallet/Your heart was glass, I dropped it/Champagne problems.” But speaking about the album, she specifically called out the plot of the song, saying, it’s “the one where longtime college sweethearts had very different plans for the same night, one to end it and one who brought a ring.”

Even if Swift’s music didn’t spell out her relationship status with Alwyn, during her recent Entertainment Weekly interview, she referred to Alwyn as her “boyfriend,” which could confirm that the pair aren’t engaged yet – or that they are and that, just like the rest of her relationship, she’s just not willing to share the news publicly.

Of course, given that they’re now working together on her records, it’s clear that Alwyn and Swift are just as in love as ever. Entertainment Tonight reported earlier this month that “Joe has provided such a great support system for Taylor. He is the one constant in her life that she can truly rely on. Joe has helped Taylor with her music, inspiring it. She is so grateful for him and in love with him. He is her cheerleader and rock. They have spoken about their future together, and they love celebrating the holidays together and are looking forward to that.”

If Alwyn hasn’t popped the question yet, the festive season sounds like the perfect time…
