Beauty is often best by the beach; salty hair, burnished skin (faux of course), and a lick of colour on eyes or lips (or both). To help you shed your winter skin in favour of makeup thats lighter and brighter, YSL Beauty Director of Artistry Ross Andrewartha talks us through the season ahead: colour trends, foundation hacks, and easy ways to elevate your face come party season. See the full interview below.

GRAZIA: What three makeup trends are you anticipating will be big for summer?

ROSS ANDREWARTHA: A bold lip! This summer it’s all about adding colour. It’s not just about playing with reds, but introducing a colour you’ve never met before. I think fresh hues like fuchsia and mandarin are perfect. Try YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in Shade 13.

Glistening skin. I think traditional highlighting and contouring methods are a little done. Instead, it’s about invisible sculpting and fresh, glistening skin. Use a mix of cream blushes, bronzers and highlighters to mimic the skin’s texture and achieve a dreamy, natural-looking glow. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk is a really great foundation formula for achieving such coverage.

Coloured liner. Push yourself outside our makeup comfort zone with a bright liquid or pencil. You can make it wearable by smudging it into the lash line, or using a really fine liquid formula. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Roxy is perfect.

GRAZIA: What advice do you have for a light but long-wearing base in the warmer months?

ROSS ANDREWARTHA: I like to mix a long wearing primer – my go-to is the new Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Primer – with a pearl-sized drop of long-wearing foundation (my pick for summer is the YSL All Hours Foundation). That way, you get the glow from the primer, but longevity from the foundation.

GRAZIA: What’s the greatest makeup trick you’ve ever learnt?

ROSS ANDREWARTHA: That less is more – particularly when it comes to skin preparation before going in with any foundation. Skin is meant to look like skin, no matter what coverage you desire. I always spend ample time massaging and prepping so that foundation glides on, and I always work in layers. The trick is to not be too heavy handed and let the brush do all the work! I love to use concealer to brighten the face after foundation.

GRAZIA: What makeup trend from this year’s spring/summer fashion weeks stood out to you?

ROSS ANDREWARTHA: Metallics were so strong. I love this because it’s a great way to add light to a makeup look. There are so many different formulations and finishes that can add amazing dimension and sparkle. I feel it’s such a luxe way to elevate your makeup look.

GRAZIA: And a trend you’re a little over?

ROSS ANDREWARTHA: Insta-brows! Brows are essential for framing the face and come in all different shapes and sizes, but my rule is to always choose products that are two shades lighter than your natural brow so it looks real. I am obsessed with adding texture to the brows though, and love a fluffy feathered look.
