The intention is always there, but nailing sexy beach hair is harder in reality, made even harder when you’re overseas and away from your home hair comforts. Planning your hair product packing list calls for diligence and forward thinking. To streamline the process, we asked hairstylist Paloma Rose Garcia and colour expert Samantha Herring, both from Oscar Oscar Salon for their beach hair basics.

Consider your colour
“If a guest of mine is going somewhere hot I’ll often tone their colour down just before they jump on the plane, leaving room for any lightening that will inevitably happen in the sun,” says Herring. Her other top colour-saving tip? “Hats! They’re obviously essential for your face but also for your hair as UVA and UVB are so damaging for your hair and your colour,” she warns, suggesting tucking your whole ponytail up and underneath for proper protection.

Upgrade your essentials
“I always recommend to my guests that they take a more nourishing or frizz-fighting shampoo and conditioner than they would normally use,” suggests Garcia, who said Kerastase’s smoothing Discipline saved her hair on a recent trip to Hvar. “Going for a heavier shampoo will cleanse your scalp of sand and counteract the saltwater, while a richer conditioner will help weigh down the frizz.”

Supercharge your hydration
Eschew conditioner for a hydrating treatment mask that will undo the day’s damage, and even better leave it in all day. “If I know I’m going to be out in the sun all day with my hair up, I’ll coat my ponytail in a treatment, clip it up and throw on a hat,” admits Garcia. “Essentially I’m hydrating my hair while everything else tries to dehydrate it.” If all day isn’t for you, layer some in before bed or extend a hair masks efforts by throwing your hair into a treatment-soaked topknot for breakfast.

EXPAND YOUR STYLING PORTFOLIO
Fact: that hotel-room hairdryer will never fulfil your Victoria’s Secret waves so spend less time near the outlet, more time outside and opt for alternate styling options. First off, embarce the air-dry and find a heatless style that works for your hair type. “If you’re lacking texture try a half-up top knot and scrunch some texture spray through the bottom half,” suggests Garcia, saying hydration should be your focus as dry, brittle hair is even harder to style. “Long hair can be loaded with serum and braided before heading out to dinner or if you have something special on throw it up and only tong the hair around your face, you’ll look instantly put together without the stress.”

Never leave without a leave-in
Don’t use a leave in product? Now is the time to start, particular if your hair is coloured. “Smoothing serums are great for controlling frizz and making your hair look great, but you also want something that contains moisturising ingredients to go deeper,” explains Garcia, saying she packed Shu Uemura Ultimate Remedy for a best of both worlds post-shower offering. “The lotion is loaded with ceramides, which is amazing for repairing damaged ends.”
