Prince George just turned six years old, and the birthday wishes are rolling in.
George received birthday shout-outs from some high profile people, not least the world’s most talked about couple, his uncle and aunt, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Proving Meghan and Harry can truly never win in the eyes of the public, their message to George, which they wrote in a comment on a post by his parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, has been criticised by some.
Why? Read the message and see if you can guess:
“Happy birthday. Wishing you a very special day and lots of love!”
Can you spot the problem? Well, according to some people, Meghan and Harry should have addressed Prince George using his royal title, His Royal Highness.
“He is the future KING. Treat him with respect,” one commenter wrote. “He is HRH!!!!!!!!!”
“He is HRH Prince George to you!!!!” said another. “Don’t forget to mention!”
And, there was this:
“When all the royal accounts have [used] a ‘prince’ except yours…so there is really something.”
Forgive us if we’re missing something about British culture and tradition, from all the way over here in Australia, but surely as Prince George’s aunt and uncle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not required to address him as His Royal Highness.
What makes the criticism even more hypocritical is that Meghan and Harry were slammed for doing the exact opposite on Prince William’s birthday last month.
You might remember that Harry and Meghan commented on a post about his birthday on the Cambridges’ account:
“Happy Birthday to The Duke of Cambridge!”
Many people thought the message, in which they used William’s official title, was too formal and impersonal, and claimed it was evidence of the rift between the couples.
See? They just can’t win.
