At yesterday’s Golden Globes, the hair modus operandi was clear: slick it. Be it slicked over, slicked back, slicked up, slicked down – the slick did not discriminate, manifest on myriad celebrity and Globe-goer.
From Anne Hathaway’s straight down the line, behind-the-ear, neat slick, to Charlize Theron’s deep side slick with ironed, kinked ends, the hair memo was straight and sleek and applied to both an out and up ‘do. For Theron, it was all about clamping hair straight with the ghd platinum+ styler, with hairstylist Adir Abergel flat ironing Charlize’s hair into sections for a shiny, expensive finish.
Camilla Belle’s hair, for example, was left all the way out but gelled back so much its finish was wet and shiny.
On the other hand, Jessica Chastain raised hell – or hair – with her iconic red mane pulled up high in a stiff, slick high pony.
Then the was the darling Lili Reinhart, who opted for a well-oiled chignon; chic and simple.
Of course, there was the occasional bouffant, the typical cascading mane, but for the most part the hairstyle du jour was flat, lacquered hair (also very practical when for a marathon-like event as the Globes). But when replicating at home, the look is often not as simple as it looks. So was what is the trick to the slick? “The biggest slick secret I can dish out when you want that super slick polished hair is to always start on damp hair,” says celebrity hairstylist Anthony Nader. “Apply your smoothing lotion from roots to ends and comb through thoroughly. Use the narrowest nozzle for blow drying as this, too, smooths over strands to make them look Hollywood red carpet-worthy.” Plus, it all comes down to your choice tools, advises Nader. “The top tip here as is using a large paddle brush with loads of boar bristles as this also combats frizzy strands and tames unruly hair textures.” And for that final blast of shine, the secret lies in the spritz. “Lastly if your wanting more mega high voltage sheen like Charilize Theron, give a once over with a shine mist spray and you’re good to go.”
