In a week of momentous, albeit surprising, celebrity beauty moments, Selena Gomez’s blonde transformation was by far the most noteworthy. The overnight change from deep brunette to bleached blonde undoubtedly sparkled worldwide beauty hysteria, particularly for those of us who know exactly how much time, effort and money such a drastic colour change involves. But how then?

9 hours. 300 foils. 8 bowls of bleach. 2 stylists. That’s how.

What appeared to be a seemingly swift transformation, actually involved a painstakingly protracted process involving a whole of time, effort and bleach. Riawna Capri, of Nine Zero One salon in Los Angeles, was one of the two stylists called to hair arms; enlisted to make Selena blonde. Detailing the arduous process on Instagram, Riawna sent out a warning of sorts (particularly for those with a newfound inkling to hit the bleach):

“Dear Hairstylist, (for all of you who were asking) when your client brings in a picture of #NirvanaBlonde, you pull up this informational insta and let them know it took 9 hours, about 300 foils, and 8 bowls of bleach, all with 2 stylist working together simultaneously, (@nikkilee901and myself). It was a nice long patient process of baby fine slices, then going back and opening each foil and reapplying, but done in one sitting. Anything is possible in one day, it just takes time, no other clients ha, and patience to maintain the integrity of the hair. And to all you clients that want this, hopefully this explains the process a bit better so you can now be VERY patient with your stylist.”

Blonde wannabes short of patience take note: such a task is not the faint hearted, i.e. not celebrities.

For us mere mortals, who simply don’t have nine hours to spare, countless cash flow and very, very patient colourists (an often difficult feat, trust us), best to stick to a gradual progression in your quest for the peroxide ‘do.

Remember, (hair) life is a journey.
