In a recent interview, Selena Gomez has gotten candid on her past relationships. The 28-year-old artist also spoke on the meaning behind her most recent album, Rare, which is tattooed on her neck to serve as a reminder.

“I think most of my experiences in relationships have been cursed,” Gomez said. “I’ve been way too young to be exposed to certain things when I was in relationships. I guess I needed to find what was that word for me, because I felt so less than in past relationships, and never really felt equal.”

She explained that the word “rare” (which is also the namesake for her beauty brand, Rare Beauty) embodied the way she wanted to live life.

“It wasn’t even necessarily like: ‘Oh, I feel that way, let me sing it.’ It was almost like: ‘Actually, I need to feel that way about myself,'” she said. “I think that my family, and my chosen family—I feel like I’m surrounded by real people.”

Gomez was of course the centre of an off-again, on-again relationship with Justin Bieber . After releasing the hit Lose You To Love Me in 2019, the artist echoed the aforementioned comments and discussed becoming herself in a chat with Interview Magazine

“It got out of control when I was super young,” she told the publication. “I think it showed people that I was weak in certain moments, and that I had troubles. Some people just get off on building people up and then trying to bring them down… People worry about me because I’ve had some trouble in the past. And it’s kind, it is. But I’m okay. I deal with what I deal with, and if I feel like I’m having a rough week or I’m not up to doing something, I don’t do it.”
