May 10, 2021: A year without professional manicures has everyone hyper-aware of super cool nail art. That said, Selena Gomez‘s manicure at this weekend’s Global Citizen’s Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the World concert was the talk of the town. For the event, the hitmaker rocked an oval-shaped nail painted in black and white by celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, with the underside of the nail painted red à la famous red bottoms of Louboutin shoes. He aptly calls them the “French twist with a flipside.”

Bachik took inspiration from Gomez’s red Bottega Veneta dress and black leather boots and used OPI GelColour to give the polish a shiny lacquered finish. He used the OPI GelColour in Black Onyx for the inky black colour used as the background colour of the nail, and OPI GelColour in Alpine Snow for the rounded, deep French tips that are more round than square and go higher up on the nail than the traditional technique. The nail pro painted the back of the free edge with a classic red OPI GelColour in Big Apple Red. While the exact shades used for Gomez are intended for professional use, the nail polish brand sells the same colours for us regular people, too.

The French manicure has come back in full force in 2021, which is exciting in its own right. But what’s piqued our interest even more is the “bottom edge” manicure. This technique draws as much attention to the underside of the nail as the top. I mean, who says nail polish only goes on the tops of the nails, anyway?
