How did I ever doubt these hands?

As an accomplished pianist of a decade, my first question upon meeting the La La Land location manager was “How did Ryan Gosling learn to play the piano in three months?” Because, the fluidity of his fingers and wrists, the pace of those scales running up and down the keys and the quick and intricate trills those jazz notes required just couldn’t be learnt in 12 weeks. Those hands were as good as any jazz evangelist and how could I have spent years learning to read and play what Gosling picked up in weeks? The location manager – like the director Damien Chazelle – stuck to their story and assured me Gosling never used a hand double in any scene of the film. Nope, I told everybody that simply just couldn’t be the case.

Now new behind-the-scenes footage provided to Variety shows Gosling rehearsing for a scene with John Legend. A hand double was reportedly on stand-by but was never required. Take a peek for yourself here.
