As black-clothed, microphone-wearing producers rushed onto the Academy Awards stage amid the Best Picture gong being awarded in 2017, Ryan Gosling knew something wasn’t quite right. But it’s where his mind went to that warranted the boy-ish giggles when the truth was revealed. Moonlight had actually won Best Picture, not La La Land as wrongfully announced and would the latter now all kindly exit the stage. Here, during an interview with Adobe CMO Ann Lewnes, the 26-year-old actor explains his reaction.

“What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt,” he said. “I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head,” he added. “And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”

“Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won,” he continued. “I know the director [Barry Jenkins] … I’ve worked with them before,” he explains. “It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognised.”
