Despite being two of the most famous actors in the world, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes manage to keep a low-profile and keep their relationship and family life mostly out of the public eye. So much so that there’s barely any paparazzi photos of the pair, despite them being together for nearly a decade.

Naturally, anytime we get a glimpse into their world, we positively lap it up, and thankfully, Gosling is feeling giving for the festive season. In a new interview, the 41-year-old actor opened up about raising the couple’s two children during Covid and how they’re coming to terms with their parents’ high-profile jobs.

On the subject of time, Gosling said to British GQ, it’s “something I think about a lot now” due to his kids “growing up so fast.” He noted, “I need to keep an eye on the clock in a way I never used to.”

Like many parents, the pair found keeping their two young daughters, Esmeralda, 7, and Amada, 5, entertained during  the Covid-inforced lockdowns over the past two years difficult. “Our kids were at a difficult age not to be able to see other kids and interact with people, even though Eva and I did our best,” Gosling said, before joking he and Mendes seemed to do “more acting in quarantine than in our films. Tougher crowd, though.”

As for his real acting—or realising their parents’ jobs and fame—Gosling said he’s in no rush to alert the girls, especially at their young age while they still find it hard to decipher between the fantasy and reality aspects of his job. “I think they finally figured it out… that my name is actually ‘The Gray Man’ and I’m an assassin for the CIA,” he joked, referencing his new movie The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Regé-Jean Page.

While Gosling and Mendes will briefly talk about their kids in interviews, they don’t post any photos of their children on social media. “I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids,” Mendes wrote to an Instagram follower in 2020. “I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life. And since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent.”

Mendes and Gosling also prefer to keep their relationship out of the public eye. “As far as Ryan and I,” she continued, “it just works for us this way, to stay private.”
