Ryan Gosling confirmed something we’d suspected for a while when he appeared on The Ellen Show this week – his beloved dog George is no longer with us.

Telling Ellen that George died last December at the ripe old age of 17, it was almost hard to watch as the actor told stories about his pooch – it was obvious how much he meant to him.

He was also wearing George’s name tag on a chain around his neck, something he wears all the time to remember man’s best friend.

“He was a good friend to me,” the Blade Runner star said, noting his mixed-breed dog joined on the set of “almost every movie” he’s ever filmed.

“[He was] like an aging rock star,” he joked. “He was sort of skinny-fat, had big hair and no teeth, open sores — but still sexy.”

He also said George often seemed more like a person than a dog.

“One time we were at an outdoor restaurant and he was sort of sitting on the pavement, looking forlorn down the street,” he said.

“Someone got up to go to the restroom, and I guess he’d had enough, and he got up on their seat and sat down at the table like a gentleman and looked around the table, like, ‘Yeah, that’s right.’”

When Ellen suggested Ryan get a new dog, his only comment was “we’ll see”.

RIP George.
