After trying for many years to break into acting, Ruby Rose exploded onto the Hollywood scene in 2015 when she was cast in Orange Is The New Black.
Since then she’s charged from one project to the next, starring in John Wick: Chapter 2, Pitch Perfect 3 and The Meg. But her next part could be the one to define her career as a screen actor: the lead role in upcoming TV series Batwoman.
Based on the DC Comics character, Batwoman will be the first openly gay superhero. As a queer woman herself, for the 33-year-old Australian it’s more than just an acting job.
“Everyone wants to play a superhero,” Rose tells Emmy magazine.
“Batwoman, in particular, means so much to me because she’s so comfortable within her sexuality. It’s a character that I wish I could have seen on television growing up.
“It’s time. It’s time to have a gay superhero.”
The former MTV Australia host also reflected on the tough start she experienced after packing up her life in Australia in 2013 and moving to Los Angeles.
“I packed up everything and came to the States with, like, two suitcases,” she said.
“And I didn’t get anything for two years. Couldn’t get a manager, couldn’t get an agent, could not get an audition.”
Rose also discussed what landing the role meant to her when she appeared on The Jimmy Fallon Show last year.
“Growing up, watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV I could identify with—let alone a superhero,” she said.
She also revealed an eerie coincidence – that she loved bats as a child, after her mother nursed sick bats back to health who ended up staying on as pets.
“I made bat wings out of recycled cardboard boxes. I would sleep in them, and I would run around in them, and I would jump off high things … they were soggy and wet and smelly and gross—and I just lived in them.
“Now, I get ones that aren’t made of cardboard! It’s a good story.”
Batwoman will debut on The CW Network in October.
