Batwoman is more than just a role for Ruby Rose.

As revealed this week, the 32-year-old Australian has been cast as the comic book hero in a CW network cross-over special, a series of episodes to air this year.

A pilot for a full TV series starring Rose as Batwoman, the first openly lesbian superhero, is also in the works.

When the Orange Is The New Black star appeared on The Jimmy Fallon Show overnight, she struggled to fight back tears, admitting she’d been emotional since finding out she’d scored the role, and almost lost it at the premiere of her new film The Meg recently.

“I was so nervous during the red carpet that I basically skipped everybody. I kept spontaneously crying,” she said.

“The reason I kept getting so emotional is because growing up, watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV I could identify with—let alone a superhero,” she said of Kate Kane, an out-and-proud lesbian whose alter-ego is Batwoman.

Explaining she lives by two mottos, “Be yourself, because everyone else is taken,” and “Be the person that you needed when you were younger,” Rose explained “I felt like one motto led me to the other and I just kept crying about it.”

She also revealed an eerie coincidence – that she loved bats as a child, after her mother nursed sick bats back to health who ended up staying on as pets.

“I made bat wings out of recycled cardboard boxes. I would sleep in them, and I would run around in them, and I would jump off high things … they were soggy and wet and smelly and gross—and I just lived in them.

“Now, I get ones that aren’t made of cardboard! It’s a good story.”
