Few beauty trends have endured the test of time quite like red lipstick. It’s a symbol of all that’s great about makeup: boldness, power, expression and transformation. Take Dior’s iconic Rouge Dior. Lauded as one of the original red lipsticks, the franchise launched back in 1953 as an extension of Christian Dior’s desire to dress a woman. Since then, it’s been reinvented and relaunched countless times, but all the while staying true to its origins as couture lipstick.
Now, some 68 years after it was originally created, Rouge Dior has been transformed yet again, this time under the expertise of Creative and Image Director of Christian Dior Makeup (and all-round genius) Peter Philips. The lipstick now comes in a refillable bullet – a move that’s both sustainability-led, and makes a point of the keepsake quality of a signature lip colour. It’s a nice full circle moment too, as the original design by Christian Dior himself was refillable.
The formula itself has also undergone some adjustments. Infused with red peony, pomegranate blossom and shea butter, it nourishes lips without compromising on pigment. The line is also now available in two new finishes to complement the existing satin and matte iterations. There’s super matte velvet: a soft, almost-airy texture; and metallic: a foil-like bright hue.
Given both this editors, and Christian Dior’s affinity for a true red lip, the new super matte comes in the brand’s iconic 999 – a vivid, bold candy apple shade.
