SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: “We’ve met,” Rosie Huntington Whiteley says, her pointed index finger pressing against a curious eye and a knowing head tilt. When I delicately inform the model we have not actually met, she spins a flirty line. “I remember a beautiful face.”

When you have six minutes with any talent, there’s not a lot of room for introductory banter. And aside from the pleasantries of what Huntington-Whiteley had for breakfast this morning (she went to Bills in Bondi and ordered the ricotta hotcakes for the record), telling the journalist she has a pretty face is a pretty good start. Especially given we are inside MeccaLand’s fairground-like installation at Carriageworks to chat about her collaboration with face chiefs bareMinerals.

The partnership is an apt one. As the brand’s title dictates, their focus on minimalism underscores the belief that makeup should not only make you look good but should also be good for your skin. For Huntington-Whiteley, this is a big deal, because surprisingly she struggles with “bouts of acne”. “I don’t believe in beauty secrets. I’m a girls-girl. If I have any, I’m going to spill but for me, it always starts with skin,” she says. “That’s the canvas of everything and it is the thing I struggle with the most. I have to be really diligent with my skincare routine.”

Confessing to feeling her most beautiful both when she’s “got sweatpants on and there’s sick my hair” while looking after her one-year-old son Jack and on a red carpet “post three hours of glam and an amazing dress”, the 32-year-old says she’s cautious about exposing her child to a changing beauty world. “As I get older and certainly since becoming a mother, you really do start to see that beauty does come from the inside,” she says. “You start to really think about things in a different way and you think about what you want your children to grow up seeing. The way that you are is what they absorb.”

“I’ve met so many beautiful people across the course of my career and some are truly beautiful and some have a beautiful face and are not.”

“That’s just the truth,” she continued. “It’s definitely something that I’m very mindful of. We live in a world and I work in an industry that is so focused on everything outwardly and not so focused on inward so certainly as [Jack] grows up, I want to protect him in the best way I can and give him the most normal upbringing that he can have.”

Huntington-Whiteley admits she, like any mum, is time-poor and a little “lazy” when it comes to putting makeup on. With her favourite products meticulously laid bare in front of us, she talks us through them ever so eloquently in that British accent.

“The cleansing water is really beautiful,” says Rosie. “Usually I’ll cleanse my skin in the morning and then I’ll use the Cleansing Water to remove any residue left on my skin.”

“The Sleeping Gel Cream is amazing. I like a gel or a serum more than I like a thick cream and this is really beautiful, it’s like a hybrid of a cream and a gel.”

“If you haven’t tried this Powder Foundation, it’s truly a game-changer and every girl needs to have this in her bag. It’s so great for quick on-the-go makeup touch-up and if you’re lazy like me and don’t want to spend to hours doing your makeup, this is just great. As it’s a powder foundation, I was really skeptical of before I tried it. I was thinking, ‘How is this going to give me coverage and not be really cakey and dry?’. It actually has this beautiful luminous finish and you just dab it on. You do need to colour match it. It’s definitely worth it.”bareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation, $47.00, available at MECCA. “I always have a great concealer on me. There’s always imperfections that need covering.”

“I’ve a big fan of Bare Mineral’s long-wear lipsticks which have just launched because they have such an amazing shade collection. Today I’m wearing ‘Cinnamon’. They are long-wear and really rich and creamy on the lip so they hold up all day. And I love them on the cheeks as well.”

In addition to her bareMinerals skincare regime, Huntington-Whiteley says she never skips out on a facial and is currently “seeing a woman in LA” at a place called Biba. And for those asking, Yes. In person, her lips are the exact degree of pillowy-ness as her Instagram would have you believe. I’ll remember this beautiful face.
