Robert Pattinson has finally left his image as a teen heartthrob behind, impressing the Cannes Film Festival critics with his latest performance.
Good Time, a dark, compelling crime thriller directed by brothers Ben Safdie and Joshua Safdie, received a six-minute standing ovation after its screening this week.
The film is set in New York and tells the story of Connie Nikas (Pattinson), a petty thief trying to get his brother out of notoriously dangerous prison Rikers Island after a heist gone wrong, while also trying to keep himself out of the grasp of the law and other criminals.
Critics have heaped praise on the movie and in particular Robert’s performance, with many announcing that Pattinson has finally managed to shake off the heartthrob reputation he gained from starring in the Twilight franchise.
Variety called it a “career high” for the 31-year-old, while The Hollywood Reporter said Rob emanated a “can’t-look-away intensity”.
Incredibly, Good Time was filmed on the streets of New York for an entire year guerilla-style without arousing much notice from the public. Which makes more sense when considering Pattinson’s weathered look in the movie – no porcelain skin or fangs to be seen.
