“I get crazy in a bookstore,” Academy Award-winning actor and founder of literary and media empire Hello Sunshine Reese Witherspoon once told an interviewer. “It makes my heart beat hard… I want to buy everything.”
Now, the 48-year-old is making that same feeling one you can experience from your own device. On June 5 Apple announced Apple Books would be the official audiobook home for Witherspoon’s beloved Reese’s Book Club. Yes, a dedicated page within the app will feature monthly picks selected by Witherspoon and her Book Club editors. Additionally, authors and talent from the Hello Sunshine community will curate audiobook recommendation lists throughout the year. The one common denominator of every selection, however, is that a female must be the central character, this latest venture another avenue for Witherspoon to increase the reach of women’s stories.
“For so many people, audiobooks are a powerful and accessible way to enjoy the experience of an amazing book,” says Witherspoon. “We’re truly excited to partner with Apple Books to connect our incredible community and audiobook lovers everywhere with the latest Reese’s Book Club picks.”
“Reese has been a powerful force in spotlighting diverse storytelling and new perspectives, and we’re thrilled to welcome her to Apple Books, the best place to experience millions of books and audiobooks,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “Our customers can now enjoy themed editorial collections and exclusive audiobook recommendations from Reese’s community, only on Apple Books.”
The announcement makes settling into the icy Australian winter that little bit more enticing. Whether commuting into the city for work or pottering about home on the weekend, audiobooks are a beautifully immersive way to experience storytelling on the go. Witherspoon’s June pick is The Unwedding, a fast-paced whodunnit by #1 New York Times bestselling author Ally Condie.
“It opens with a wedding at a gorgeous resort in Big Sur… but everything begins to fall apart when the main character Ellery discovers a dead body the morning of the ceremony,” Witherspoon told her 30.2 million Instagram followers on June 5.
