In case you missed it due to all that Coachella coverage, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a surprise trip to England last week to visit the royal family while on their way to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games.
The couple’s trip to visit the Queen is the first since the fallout from their Oprah interview — never forget, “were you silent or were you silenced?” — and the decision has been described as an “olive branch” by royal editor Ingrid Seward, who told The Sun, via Hello Magazine, “It is a wonderful opportunity to clear the air and offer an olive branch.” She added, “After everything that has gone on it must have taken a lot for Harry and Meghan to go to Windsor.”
Furthermore, the date the couple chose to visit Harry’s grandmother is a significant one: as Seward notes, “Maundy Thursday is a very special day for the Queen as it is about forgiveness. She is not one to hold grudges and I think she would have happily welcomed them with open arms.”
Despite visiting the royals while in the UK, the duo didn’t manage to see an important two people: Prince William and Kate Middleton. But not because they were avoiding them in the corridors of Kensington Palace, rather because their visit coincided with the Cambridges being away skiing in the French Alps.
According to Hello Magazine, William and Kate visited the resort of Courchevel with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis ahead of the Easter long weekend. The family made it back to England just in time to celebrate Easter, where they were photographed at church, as is their annual tradition.
Meanwhile, the Sussexes are currently in the Netherlands where they’ve been supporting competitors at the games. It’s unclear if they’ll be making another trip to see the royals on their way back home to California — this time with Kate and Wills in town, but considering their first visit was kept strictly confidential until after the fact, chances are we won’t know either way.
