Prince Harry has become the first British Royal family member to meet a Trump after meeting with Melania Trump in Canada.

Harry and the US First Lady were in Toronto for the Invictus Games, a competitive sporting event for injured former servicemen founded by the Prince.

Photos of the meeting show both Melania and Harry looking a little awkward, stiffly shaking hands before sitting down to discuss Canada and the Invictus Games.

The stiff encounter shows just how much distance there is between the Royal family and the Trumps when compared with the Obamas, who the Royals had an openly close and warm relationship with. Ahead of last year’s Invictus Games, the Obamas and the royal partnered up for a funny promotional video that went viral.

One reason the British Royals and the Trumps have a frosty relationship could be a tweet Donald Trump sent about Kate Middleton in 2012.

“Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing,” Trump wrote. “Come on Kate!”

The update was in reference to a French magazine that published nude photographs of Kate taken without her permission, which she took legal action against.

Harry has probably already forgotten his underwhelming meeting with Melania – it’s been reported he will make his first public appearance with Meghan Markle at the Invictus Games in the coming days.
