There is something magic that happens when you pair legendary hairstylist Guido Palau with makeup icon (and Dame of the British Empire) Pat McGrath. Of course, each is magnificent on their own, but together, they’re an unmistakable force in beauty. Case in point is last night’s Prada show, where Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada showed their FW2021 collection – their second as co-creative directors.

Palau, known for his sculptural hairstyles, crafted a divisive look that saw the front half of the hair slicked back, the ends kept loose and face-framing sections gelled fiercely down the side of each models face. Texture was left as is for the most part, but the roots where quite literally flattened down to a slick, glassy perfection. Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny the precision and skill that went into it.

McGrath’s work on the makeup front was also a display of skill. As always the case with McGrath, skin was so creamy and ethereal it was almost translucent. Some lips were smudged with coral or peach, whereas other were bare. But it was a dual-metallic eye that stole the show; a silver arc on one eye, and gold on the other. Not every model had this detail, and from the runway it was only just visible… but up close, as detailed on McGraths Instagram, it was magic.

On model Lydia Kloos, McGrath took it one step further and incorporated a lilac halo under the brow and above the shadow. An unusual touch but one that was beautiful to look at.

Between McGrath and Palau, it was artistic and detailed – not a hair nor piece of metallic pigment out of place. And against Prada’s new direction, it was perfect.
