There was a big, albeit secretive, lavish wedding in 2015. But according to TMZ, there is no hard evidence to suggest the ceremony was ever made official. Last week, after seven years together (and two years married), Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux announced their separation.

But when the online publication went digging for the marriage certificate, they were told the couple did not have one in LA County (which is strange since Aniston lives there). “We also checked with numerous divorce lawyers, and no one, as far as we can see, has been contacted by either Jen or Justin,” TMZ said. “It’s certainly possible they’re legally married, but based on what we found, it’s possible they’re not.”

In the joint announcement, the couple claimed they parted ways at the end of 2017. “In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation,” the couple said to HollywoodLife.com. “This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship. Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.”
