Perhaps even more surprising than Blake Lively’s performance in The Shallows beating out Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts and Amy Adams, was Johnny Depp’s acceptance speech. The actor who just finalised his divorce settlement with now ex-wife Amber Heard days earlier appeared, well, out of it, really, as he subtly addressed he-said-she-said accusations. “I came here tonight for one reason and one reason only. I came for you; the people,” he began. “For whatever good times or bad, you’ve stood by me and trusted me. You very graciously invited me here once again tonight so I appreciate that very much, you have no idea.”
Appearing to notice his time on the microphone was soon up, Depp, semi-dishevelled, said “I think the band underneath me is going to shoot me or something.”
“I was very deeply affected by your kindness and recognition and the well wishes to my family and to myself which is why this is especially meaningful for me to be here to say thank you.”
