With Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Dev Patel, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Ruth Negga all nominated in the acting categories, #OscarsSoWhite appears to have been left in 2016. But, with the appointment of a new and controversial President comes new fodder and it can be expected today that the acceptance speeches will become political platforms.

Meanwhile, La La Land – while having cleaned up at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Critics Choice already – is expected to take home several of its 14 nominations (Damien Chazelle will surely win Best Director). Could this be the year Emma Stone takes home her first Oscar (and steals is from Natalie Portman for her role as Jackie Kennedy)? Then there’s the Best Actor category which is already clouded by judgement as journalists prepare to take on the Academy should they dare celebrate an alleged sexual predator, Casey Affleck, by awarding him the top gong. We, of course, would love to see Nicole Kidman take home Best Supporting Actress for her motherly role in Lion but we’re expecting Viola Davis’s powerful monologue in Fences to take home the Oscar.

While we wait, let’s take a peek at the red carpet.
