Leave it to model, actress, entrepreneur and GRAZIA covergirl, Olivia Culpo, to school us in the art of red lipstick. Also leave it to Shiseido, masters of makeup and luxury skincare, to create the perfect one (or two).

So how does one truly rock red like Miss Culpo? By listening to celebrity makeup artist and Shiseido Global Colour Artist Patrick Ta, of course.

Like us, Ta loves a power pout. “I love a nice crisp bold lip,” he declares. But, according to the makeup whiz, the perfect red lip all starts with a well-drawn line, and with Shiseido’s all-new makeup range – you don’t even need a lip liner. “With the Shiseido ModernMatte Powder Lipstick bullets you can draw the most precise line,” he explains. Thanks to its brilliant bevelled edge, the clever lipstick is a multi-tasker, meaning you can line and lipstick in one (read: genius). “I like to use two colours, and start by lining the lips first with a darker shade so you can build up the dimension.” Remember though, don’t drag the line downwards, keep it pert and high. “If you want to over line your lips to give you that extra pout, you always want to make sure you never over line towards the end of the lip,” advises Ta. “Start towards the centre and the perimeter is your natural shape.”

Once you’ve nailed your line, it’s time for the big show. “I use both the Shiseido VisionAiry Gel Lipstick and ModernMatte Power Lipstick because the feeling is so lightweight and they feel like you’re wearing nothing,” explains Ta. “When you’re constantly talking you don’t want it to feel like you’re lips are going to fall off, so this formula is super pigmented but feels so comfortable on your lips. And because I like to be super extra I use two colours: I use the second colour on the centre of the lip to build the shape.”

For the “extra” Ta, a great lipstick comes down to amazing colour payoff. “When you’re looking for a lipstick, you want it to be impactful with colour; you want a super high pigment so that if you just want a little colour, you can take your finger and pat it on your lips and just give it a little stain.”

We don’t need to tell you how a slick of red can change your mood and confidence, but it can also change your look. “The reason why I love lipstick, too, I feel like it amplifies your look from 0 – 100.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Patrick. The ultimate uplifter, make like Culpo and paint the town – and your lips – red.
