An someone who began her career at DOLLY magazine, it was humbling to watch international media – namely New York’s Vulture – call for a moment’s silence for the now defunct beloved teenage magazine. After 46 years in the Australian publishing industry, we said goodbye to it last month due to dwindling sales and a changing print landscape. It really is baffling to think how today’s millenials can get through teen life without such a thought-out, trusted and edited down playbook on how to do life. Alas, they have the internet.

But perhaps the reason this international spotlight has been cast on our time in mourning was Nicole Kidman’s early involvement with DOLLY. Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, the Australian actress cringed as he showed pictures of Kidman’s modelling days as a 14-year-old with red ringlets and her leg in the air. The pictures went worldwide and while the 49-year-old was composed to begin with, Norton kept showing more and more in a bid to crack her! “Oh god no! You’re so brutal!” she shouted. What a lasting legacy for DOLLY.
