“Everything you’ve heard is true. But you haven’t heard everything,” Netflix warns. Today, the streaming giant released an explosive teaser for Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal. It is slated to be a tell-all documentary using real conversations from FBI wiretaps.

According to Netflix, the forthcoming release “goes beyond the celebrity-driven headlines and dives into the methods used by Rick Singer, the man at the center of the shocking 2019 college admissions scandal, to persuade his wealthy clients to cheat an educational system already designed to benefit the privileged.”

Building on the hype the film is the brainchild of Chris Smith, the man behind Fyre and also served as an executive producer for Tiger King

In 2020, Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli were sentenced to two months and five months in prison, respectively, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in the college admissions bribery case of 2019. The couple are accused of falsifying SAT exam results and paying USD $500,000 (AUD $761,000) in bribes for their daughters, Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose, to get into the University of Southern California, posing as athletes.

The conspirator and the man who facilitated the bribes, Rick Singer, plead guilty to racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstruction of justice. He was bribed by the government to record conversations which ultimately led to a number of convictions.

Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were among 13 parents scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston Wednesday for the first time since they were charged last month in a massive college admissions cheating scandal. They were among 50 people – including coaches, powerful financiers, and entrepreneurs – charged in a brazen plot in which wealthy parents allegedly schemed to bribe sports coaches at top colleges to admit their children. Many of the parents allegedly paid to have someone else take the SAT or ACT exams for their children or correct their answers, guaranteeing them high scores. Daughter Olivia Jade spoke out for the first in December 2020 on an episode of Red Table Talk with Jada-Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. She admitted she didn’t realise the extent of what was happening at the time.

“To be honest, I wasn’t angry because I didn’t have a good understanding of what just happened. I didn’t see the wrong in it,” she told the three hosts. She continued, “A huge part about privilege is not knowing you have privilege. When it was happening, it didn’t feel wrong.”

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal will be released to Netflix on March 17, 2021.
