Lipsticks, rosy tints and glosses have been beautiful little items by which to decorate our mundane days of late; luxury indulgences to spruce up a WFH desk set-up or a 3pm Zoom meeting. Yes, amid the coronavirus health crisis, lipsticks have been compact beacons of glamour, escapism and a reminder that better days are to come.
This notion is nothing new. As GRAZIA’s beauty editor Emily Algar pointed to a couple of months ago, the lipstick index or lipstick effect is a phenomenon that is very much in full flight at the moment. “After the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Estée Lauder Chairman Leonard Lauder spoke about an increase in the brand’s lipstick sales – theorising that when times are tough and spending is limited, people may look towards little luxuries (like lipsticks) to add a sense of normalcy or hope to an otherwise bleak period,” she writes.

With the rise of the mandatory mask, however, there are some whispers on certain channels that the rise in lipstick sales will soon be replaced by beauty products that accentuate the eyes; lashes, eyeliners, mascaras. While the eyes might have it in a little while, this week is about the feeling of joy that only a lipstick can bring.
