The message of female empowerment at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards isn’t lost on Shanina Shaik.

When GRAZIA caught up with the Victoria’s Secret angel on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall in New York, Shaik admitted she was feeling inspired by the women demanding most of the night’s attention – Jennifer Lopez, who’s receiving the Vanguard Award, and Cardi B, who’s racked up a whopping 10 nominations. (This is two more than Beyoncé and Jay Z).

Incidentally, Cardi B and Lopez are two women who grew up in the Bronx with no Hollywood connections, and have gone on to achieve super stardom.

“It’s important to never give up,” Shaik told GRAZIA.

“There’s going to be so many obstacles and people that are going to tell you won’t be able to achieve your dream, or you shouldn’t [pursue it].

“That’s what Cardi B always says, that there were a lot of haters that tried to stand between her and her dream, but she’s kept on going. It’s hard but you have to have a lot of strength inside.”

GRAZIA’s Jessica Bailey caught up with Shanina Shaik at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York.

Shaik, 27, who married DJ Ruckus this year, also mentioned the support she gets from fellow women in her industry, and how crucial it is for success.

“I think it’s important for all the girls in this industry to have a real comradery.”

Shaik looked incredible on the VMAs carpet, and she shared her secrets to looking her best.

“I got a facial and a mani and pedi. This morning I got a good workout in, to sweat so I can feel good. [When I travel I] bring my workout equipment with me: a skipping rope and small weights. I also find Pilates is a great workout for all women.”
