Like her sensational current album, Glorious Heights, we suspect there will be no sonic continuity to Montaigne’s national shows when they begin next week. Similar to her sound, each show will be varied with anthemic pop influences interspersed with throwbacks to 1980s vibes. “Clip My Wings, In The Dark, Because I Love You, none of the songs on this album sounds the same!” says Montaigne.

The same will be applied to her tour wardrobe, she tells us. On our last meeting in early February 2016, the singer-songwriter had explicit styling notes; No skirts, dresses or heels. Not afraid of a masculine look with a touch of femininity. Androgynous with inspirations from Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Bjork. “The thing is with me…” Montaigne explains, drawing breath. “…is I’m very set on what I like but, fashion speaking, you’ll probably get something different with every show. Bowie was similar. He changed up his look every single show and I’m still figuring it out I guess.”

Born into a musical household in Sydney in 1995, the self-assured singer says she didn’t come into her own style until she cut loose her dreadlocks and chopped her hair short. “My thing was that I wasn’t happy with the way I looked and the way I was dressing. I just didn’t identity with it,” she says. “For the first time, I looked in to the mirror at my new short hair and thought, ‘this actually feels right.’” Little did she know then, it was the beginning of a by-trademark, second only to her voice.

Ever the innovator in style and music, Glorious Heights showcases Montaigne’s (real name Jessica Cerro) distinguished soaring vocals with lead single Because I Love You the name of the tour. “That song was inspired by a past relationship, in fact it’s about my only [romantic] relationship in my life so far,” says Montaigne. “At the time, it was good but I let certain things happen that I wouldn’t let a friend do because I was in love with him and the song is basically examining that from a retrospective perspective.” When asked if there were a chance the man in question would know he was the subject, Montaigne answers bluntly, “I don’t think he’s heard it really. He doesn’t listen to contemporary music, people around him don’t listen to contemporary music and he’s currently not living in the country so…”.

Debuting at #4 on the ARIA charts upon it’s August release, we have a feeling said man may stumble across this pearl of a song sooner rather than later.
