If you’re of the belief that a beauty look must pick either red or orange – decamp and enter unexpected territory (and maybe find new beauty friends). Reds and oranges – whilst often hewn in the beauty wold – actually work spectacularly well together. But, according to Max, the trick is in the skin. “To make them work harmoniously, it’s all about perfecting your skin, so it’s a really youthful, radiant, even skin tone,” says May. “Mix a liquid luminiser into your foundation and concentrate around areas that tend to go red. People are often scared to wear red and orange because it can bring out red in the skin, but, don’t use heavy, chalky foundations which make you look old to combat this; use a light to medium coverage and boost it with a glow to blow out any uneven skin tone.”
Then, how to blend orange and red like a pro? Top and tails your pout with block colour. Slick a rogue on the top and orange on the bottom, and together, it’s naughty colour bonding in a very subtle way. “Try and choose tones that are opposite,” adds May, referencing this traffic-stopping look. “We chose a blue-based red and a yellow-toned orange – opposite in tone is usually what makes it work.” But, if you like your tones tight, “play with texture, do a gloss vs. matte, or the reverse.”
For the brave, embrace a bold extension of the pink-eye trend, and paint your peepers red. Look to Hollywood – and namely Vanngo’s work – on stars like Emily Ratijakowski and Selena Gomez for your ultimate inspiration. Sound the alarm with fire engine red across sockets – keep its articulation slightly washy and glossy for a dreamier mood, or graphic and sharp. For those who favour citrus notes, take to the eye with a jolt of burnished coral, or flaunt blocked-out colour on nails with a red-orange hybrid. Choose either clean and crisp or ruddy and reddy, this is homogenised colour for those who like it hot.
