Pink instantly renders girlish sensibilities; dolly, dainty, pretty, painterly. But, to keep it less dolly and more modern, introduce baby blues. Flirt with aquatic tones – cobalt, aqua, ultramarine – cooling down the passion of pink with a little ice. Ink icy lines across the lash line or smudge under the waterline for some deep sea d(eye)ving. You can even play along the spectrum; working a rich navy around the eye to create depth, then washing a diluted aqua across the socket – sheer and beautifully fluid with pockets of depth.
Wade in the shallows with hair, too. Dive into one of this biggest hair trends – pastel colour – and dip-dye your locks with aqua notes. “To make it more pastel and dial down the colour, ask your colourist to dilute the tone,” suggests Wella Professionals Colour Director Marie Uva. “And make sure you use the System Professional Color Save Shampoo and Conditioner to help lock in your colour and preserve it, and ask your colourist for a take home booster to help keep colour fresh.”
For the ultimate in powdery perfection, take ‘90s cues from a Gianni-helmed Versace campaign and choose chalky candy pinks on both lid and lip. Like spun fairy floss, go sweet as pie with candy eyes and a matching pout – blurring it out slightly to keep it soft.
Or, sing the blues, with Chanel’s latest (very) bright blue gloss, Rouge Coco Gloss in Aphrodite. A bright blue lip glass may seem daunting, but according to Lucia Pica, Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer for Chanel, it all comes down to layering, and is a fantastic way to counter brights. “Layer Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in Aphrodite, a watery blue, over a brighter shade of lipstick to create a new, muted colour.” Diaphanous and brilliant, a slick across bare lips will hydrate and refresh the colour, much like the sea does to our skin.
