Miley Cyrus has released the first single off her upcoming album, Malibu.

The love song, which she previously revealed she wrote about Liam Hemsworth, is a return to her country roots after a detour with her electro-pop record Bangerz.

The Malibu video is pared back compared to her high-production clips for Wrecking Ball and We Can’t Stop. In simple clothes and minimal makeup, Miley gallivants on the beach, in a grassy field or by a river. One of her pet dogs makes an appearance.

But let’s turn our attention to the lyrics. Amongst the nods to country style, with references to the ‘sky so blue’ and ‘birds catching the wind’, Miley pays tribute to Liam, and appears to thank him for encouraging her to stop and smell the roses – or more appropriately, spend time by the sea.

“I never came to the beach or stood by the ocean
I never sat by the shore under the sun with my feet in the sand
But you brought me here and I’m happy that you did”

She also makes reference to their two-and-a-half-year break.

“I never would’ve believed you
If three years ago you told me
I’d be here writing this song”

To conclude the sentimental, feel-good track, Cyrus sings:

“Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning and you’re there to save me
And I wanna thank you with all of my heart
It’s a brand new start
A dream come true
In Malibu”

Katy Perry tweeted Miley a supportive note after Malibu’s release.
