15 years ago, Twilight was published. The pre-teen vampire romance enraptured a generation. It was the corny love story of 11-year old dreams everywhere. Each proceeding novel was devoured with vigour: there was New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, each thicker (and juicer) than the last. Then there was a spin-off novella: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. It wasn’t as popular as the original series but still a must-read for die hard fans. Of course, the films were peppered in between, starring the strong-jawed Robert Pattinson as vampiric Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart at mortal Bella Swan (who between them have Dior and Chanel contracts between them now, mind you). Then, we were teased with Midnight Sun, a further instalment written from the perspective of Edward. The world waited with bated breath but sadly, author Stephanie Meyer pulled the pin and the book was off. Hearts broke and that was it. The Twilight dream was over.

But now, some 12 years later, author Stephanie Meyer has announced that Midnight Sun is back (!) slated for release August 4, 2020. In a letter posted online, Meyers said, “I’m happy to announce that Midnight Sun is finally (very close to) ready! And will be in bookstores on August 4th. I hope this announcement doesn’t seem ill-timed; I really considered delaying the release until the world was back to normal. However, 1) who knows when that will be? And 2) you guys have waited long enough. Much longer than long enough, actually.”

She continued on, explaining that she has in fact been working on the book since it was initially cancelled: “Working on a book for more than thirteen years is a strange experience. I’m not the same person I was then. My children have all grown up. My back got weird. The world is a different place. I can only imagine all the things that have changed for you. But completing Midnight Sun has brought back to me those early days of Twilight when I first met many of you.”

Naturally, the internet has entered a state of nostalgic chaos at the news, taking to twitter to express their excitement/surprise/concern for Robert Pattinson (who has spoken out about his mixed feelings about starring in the series). So to tide you over until August 4, enjoy these reactions.
