Britain’s Prince Harry (R) and his US fiancee Meghan Markle arrive to attend a memorial service at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square in London, on April 23, 2018, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

Nine months after their shock announcement to take a step back from their roles as senior royals, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are opening up further as to their reasons behind leaving the royal family and their move from the UK to the USA.

At the time, the British press was largely thought to have played a part in the couple’s decision, after years of criticism directed at Markle and constant, ongoing rumours and stories about her friends, family and motives. Now, Markle has clarified that the trolling she endured felt “almost unsurvivable.”

Sitting down with three high school podcasters for a World Mental Health Day episode of the podcast, “Teenager Therapy,” Markle opened up about how bad her mental health was at the peak of the backlash. “I’m told that in 2019, I was the most trolled person in the entire world, male or female,” she said. “Eight months of that, I wasn’t even visible. I was on maternity leave or with the baby. But what was able to be manufactured or churned out, it’s almost unsurvivable.”

“That’s so big, you can’t even think of what that feels like,” she added. “I don’t care if you’re 15 or you’re 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”

Markle gave birth to her and Prince Harry’s first child, Archie Harrison, in May of 2019, and in October, she and Harry addressed their vicious treatment by the press in a documentary.

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable. And so that was made really challenging, and then, when you have a newborn, you know? So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom and trying to be a newlywed,” Markle told the interviewer almost in tears, adding, “It’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

Prince Harry compared the negative press to that of his mother, the late Princess Diana, and said he wouldn’t let the same tragic thing happen to his wife.

Here’s hoping that California living and an ocean between Markle and Piers Morgan is just what these two needed.
