Despite early reports that Meghan Markle was planning an A-list soirée to be held at the Montecito residence for her 40th birthday, it was later revealed she’d be having a low-key day with Prince Harry and her two young children. Markle did not fail to commemorate the big occasion however and instead announced a “challenge” for her close friends.
Taking to the couple’s Archewell Foundation website, the Duchess of Sussex released a video with comedian Melissa McCarthy to announce 40×40, “a global effort encouraging people around the world to commit to giving 40 minutes of their time to support women going back to work,” her office said in a statement.
“For my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kickoff a global effort by contributing 40 MINUTES OF MENTORSHIP to support women re-entering the workforce,” Meghan said on the site. “With this time, I hope they each help someone advance a professional life on her own terms, and, I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well.”
In true work-from-home style, Markle delivered the message via a laptop precariously stacked on a number of books. She also dressed down for the occasion and wore a cream sweater, tank top, lounge pants with the chic addition of brown suede Manolo Blahnik pumps. Eagle-eye fans will also notice that Markle layered two zodiac necklaces in honour of her two children: a Taurus constellation for Archie and a Gemini constellation for newborn Lilibet (you can shop similar styles here and here).
Prince Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, shared Markle’s birthday message on Instagram urging her followers to join the movement.
Meghan Markle is truly the gift that keeps on giving – even on her own birthday.
