Live from the Pepsi Super Bowl halftime show at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles today, Mary J. Blige performed her beloved 2001 hit “Family Affair” alongside the likes of Eminem (who was told not to take the knee but did it anyways), Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. At 51, the RnB icon still has it.

As the nine-time Grammy award winner sang and danced without missing a beat, her sweeping blonde waves barely budged. According to hairstylist Tym Wallace, who described the look as “ghetto fabulous”, he used 40 inch extensions from Upgrade Boutique.

Wallace used two different curling irons to achieve a “piece-y wave” – a 1 ½-inch marcel iron and then a flat iron – followed by the Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Teaser to back comb the roots for “major volume”. To keep it all in place he misted Blige’s hair with texture before using a spritz of the cult TRESemmé Extra Hold Hair Spray. Speaking to the publication, Wallace noted not to use too much.

“I want the hair to keep all of its movement, so I didn’t use too much product,” he said. Best of all the spray costs less than $10.

Blige’s costume of choice for the annual spectacle was a white glittery two-piece set accompanied by thigh-high boots, custom made by designer Peter Dundas. The ensemble was a collaboration between Blige, Dundas and the artist’s longtime stylist, Jason Rembert.

“I thought [the mirrors] worked really well with Mary because she pulls so much on your heartstrings with singing about things that you kind of identify with yourself,” Dundas told WWD on the inspiration behind the outfit.

Prior to the halftime show, Blige described it as an “opportunity of a lifetime”. Traditionally artists are not paid for their appearance and for the “Real Love” star she didn’t mind.

“Listen, you’re gonna be paid for the rest of your life off of this,” she told The Cruz Show. “People are gonna be knocking at your doors. They don’t have to pay me, but if they was paying it would be a lot of money.”
