From their rue-rumpled hair, to their innate ability to pull off red lipstick like it’s rien, French girls serve up an endless stream of beauty inspiration. Take Marion Cotillard, who despite being heavily pregnant still managed to put a fresh – and very French – spin on LBD while attending the Chaumet cocktail party and dinner in Paris this week.

However it wasn’t only the Allied star’s couture that satisfied the pared-back chic criteria of a winning Parisians ensemble, it was also her pedicure. Whether it’s a riff of the no make-up movement, or a simple display of a Parisian local’s love of barely-there beauty, but the actress’ toes were polish-free. Buffed or simply slicked in some clear polish, Cotillard’s naked pedicure had us thinking that perhaps steering clear of colour is the best way to show off our shoes.

If months of back-to-back polish jobs and weeks in sandals have your toes less than ready to go naked, then a well-timed detox is essential. A little lemon juice will rid toes of any final polish stains, while a nail scrub can slough away ridged and boost circulation for brighter, healthier-looking nails. A final slick of clear polish or near-transparent lacquer – we love Dior Nail Glow and Butter London Nail Foundation – will add a subtle sparkle and shine to ensure your toes are ready for their close up.
