Have you ever fallen in love with a dress before a party, despite it being wildly inappropriate for the weather? Perennial favourite Margot Robbie – Australia’s current golden girl in Hollywood – clearly felt the same way about the stunning Gucci gown she donned for the Los Angeles premiere of David Yates’ blockbuster The Legend of Tarzan last night.

Despite it being a balmy evening following a 27-degree (Celcius) day, Robbie chose a heavy dress from the Gucci Autumn/Winter 2016 collection – complete with high collar, long sleeves, warm silk fabric and fur trimming  teamed with the brand’s signature jewelled platforms, to brave the glaringly hot lights of the Hollywood red carpet.

But can we blame her? Alessandro Michele’s handiwork this season is reminiscent of Tom Ford’s heyday at the storied house, but with more of a creative, edgy twist than Ford’s uber-sexy approach. Still, by shunning the kitschy accessories added to the runway look, taking a pretty pink approach to her make-up and choosing barely-done hair, Robbie made the look her own.

Of course, there’s always a chance she’d jumped from heavily air-con’d car to chilled theatre, with that thigh-high slit offering enough ventilation to see her through the hot lights on the red carpet, but we still bow heads in collective respect for her commitment to Michele’s masterpiece – and for clearly having so much fun in the process. Anything but a Plain Jane.
