While Hailey Bieber might’ve chosen to embrace menswear codes with her new mum uniform, Margot Robbie has leant into a more feminine mode after welcoming her first child with husband Tom Ackerley in late October. After keeping news of her son’s birth to a minimum, the Academy Award-nominated actress stepped out for a stroll with her growing family in Venice Beach, showcasing her new maternal code of dress. (See pictures from the excursion, here.)

Though Robbie’s maternity style comprised of tailored Camilla + Marc suits, oversized Bottega Veneta shirting and Paris Georgia body-conscious dresses throughout her pregnancy, her most recent look is a down-to-earth ensemble that balances delicacy with utility—hallmarks fitting of the viral cottagecore trend that dominated the early 2020s. But while wearing some of the most coveted items of the last few seasons, this Barbie has proven that she can do it all, and look good doing it.

The walk along the Los Angeles coastline saw Robbie don a light cotton shirt with a lace scalloped collar underneath a pair of overalls and Dôen’s beloved velvet Mary Jane slippers. Indeed, the look is a departure from the industrialist street style we saw Robbie parade while in New York or the balmy ‘la dolce vita’ resort wear she wore during her Italian babymoon. Instead, Robbie’s first outing postpartum signals that she’s already embracing her newfound nurturing role, with the outfit a motherly, modernist escape from her usual tastes. This ensemble screams Alexa Chung circa 2010, Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago album and overpriced oat-milk iced lattes, and if that’s any indication of Robbie’s parenting style, we can’t wait to see what she wears next.

As a source told People after their baby’s arrival, Robbie and Ackerley have “wanted to start a family for quite some time”. “Family means a lot to both of them and they knew early on in their relationship being parents was something they really wanted,” they added. “They’ve been keeping it under wraps for a while but are happy the news is out.” The couple can now count the bub as their third successful collaboration after co-owning the production company LuckyChap Entertainment, which is responsible for films like I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, and their spirits brand, the coastal gin label Papa Salt.
